TRACK AND BACKGROUND INFO GRAND 12 INCHES 8

As seen below, I'll also try to include the source of the master, or at least give an indication of the master quality.

*Grand 12 Inches Exclusive,
A special version only appearing on this series, due to being never released before, restored to excellence or extended beyond all other versions available.
CD 1

1. Chaka Kahn - I Feel For You (Remix) 7:19
Master Quality
Taken from CD source, featuring the remix with drum intro. This track truly amazed me when released,
with a low end that just kept on going in that bass line.A rap that really pushed the groove along and thrust the dancefloor into gear.
2. Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel (Dance Extended Mix) 7:53
Master Reference Quality
Taken from the Sony Master Tape Archive.
This one being in 3/4 time was a difficult one to incorporate in my DJ sets. P
3. Mary Jane Girls - All Night Long (Album Version) 5:44
Master Reference Quality
Taken from record company's library.
This Song is probably more known through LLCoolJ's use of it's samples in his" Around Away Girl". Now here is the full original Song.
4. Earth, Wind & Fire - Let's Groove (Special Remixed Holiday Version) 6:41
Master Reference Quality
Taken from the Sony Tape Archive.
Special thanks to Hemmy Wapperom for digging up this one. It is a slightly different remix to the versions you might already know. A bit more reverb on the vocoder. A slightly different balance on the instruments but definitely a welcome addtion to my collection, and yours too.

5. Donna Summer - On The Radio (Long Version) 7:35
Master Reference Quality
Taken from the record company's library.
A welcome surpise for me as I kinda missed this one back in the day. Probably because of the open half tempo break the song has.I knew the radio edit but never got around to looking into the 12" version. So here it is and hear that disco break go!
6. Raw Silk - Do It To The Music (Vocal) 6:36
Master Quality
Taken from CD source.
This was one of the first tracks that I encountered in the early days of High Fashion Music, the label founded by Frits van Swoll. It brings back fond memories of early remixes and pioneering with drum machines, sound effects and making crazy edits. Here the original 12" version in all it's funky glory.

7. Shock - Let Your Body Do The Talkin’ (Special 12 Inch Disco Mix) 6:10
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company.
A pleasent surprise for me as I totally missed this one for me at the time. Probably one of those decisions at Rhythm Import or Attalos records where your ears were tired at the end of the day and you just skipped a ge like this one.
8. Shirley Lites - Heat You Up (Melt You Down) (Melt Down Mix) 6:22
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
I had several copis of the original 12" vinyl, That's how much I played it. Love the guitars that act like sequencers and the funky synths. Great vocals, great drive , great stuff. Also repared the odd start so the drums now run for a full 8 bars.

9. The Fatback Band - Is This The Future (Album Version) 8:55
Master Quality
Taken from CD.
Crazy how those lyrics still fit what is going on right now. So The Fatback Band was right on predicting the future. It sure is also funky as hell to an Intergalatic level ;)

10. Sheila E. - A Love Bizarre (Part 1 And Part 2) 12:18
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company
.
This probably illustrates best the session style of producing by Prince. This is just one long Jam where everyone is doing their stuff, improvising and mucking about. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the whole thing was recorded in one take, because you just can't plan such freestyle crazyness.

CD 2

1. Patrick Hernandez - Born To Be Alive (12 Inch Mix) 7:26
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
Here is the classic so many of you have been waiting for. Small repairs on slight tape drop outs, this version should be good for years to come. Euro Disco at it's best. These where my highschool days. You know me, I was sold at the first sequencer I heard. An absolute Grand 12 Inch.
2. Julius Brown - Party (Vocal) 6:16
Master Quality
Taken from CD.
80's Euro Disco, drumcoputers, syndrums, sequencers, the whole nine yards. It sure moved the dancefloors back then.
3. Aretha Franklin - Jump To It (Extended Version) 6:33
Master Quality
Taken from digital source.
Samples from this track have recently been used for a new production and it drives me nuts that I can't remember which track that was. Anyway, here's the original. Great stuff by a true diva of soul.

4. Loose Ends - Hanging' On A String (Contemplating) (Extended Dance Mix) 5:57
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company.
Just listen to that Roland 808 drum machine. Probably one of the best uses and bits of drum programming of the 808 ever. Way up there with the S.O.S. Band and the drum parts of sexual healing. It's awesome how it comes together resulting in a clean tight but very soulfull and natural sounding end result.
5. Gwen Guthrie - Padlock (Long Version) 6:54
Master Quality
Master provided by record company.
Another one I missed at the time. Probably with record purchases exceeding my weekly budget already or with my record bags already stuffed to the brim, it happens that gems are left behind. Great basslines, great percussion and offcourse vocals right on the dot.
6. Spence - Get It On (12”) 6:58
Master Reference Quality Grand 12 Inches Exclusive
Taken from the original stereo master mixdown outtakes.
This is a Dutch Production by Richard Dubois for which I did the 12" edit at the time. I would be supplied with several 1/4 inch tape copies of the whole mixdown and all outtakes. I would then edit form the sections together from these master quality tapes for the 12" version. The actual edited master was long lost, but the remaining tape copies survived from which this new edit was made. It doesn't match the original 12" exactly, because some snippets just weren't available anymore, but I believe this is an even better edit than the one I did in the early 80's.
7. Paul Hardcastle - Rainforest 6:33 Grand 12 Inches Exclusive
New Master Reference Quality
Master supplied by Paul Hardcastle himself.
Sometimes the original mix just is the best one and you wish it could run a little longer. Well here it is. Extended in an almost unnoticable way, it now provides a full length intro and 16 bar break and an extended build up without becoming repetitive. With compliments to Paul!
8. Sueno Latino - La Puearta Del Sol (Island Mix) 6:55
Master Quality
Master provided by record company.
Even a bit more relaxed than his first release, and with a bit of Stevie V groove going on.
9. Barbara Mason - Another Man (Vocal) 6:56
Master Quality
Master provided by record company.
Gorgeously funky and deeply Soulful, used in Intergalactic Disco Funk. I just couldn't keep the full version from you.
10. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasuredome (Pleasurefix Mix) 9:44
Master Quality
Master provided by record company.
Only very seldom it is possible to get tracks from ZTT so I jumped on this one straight away. It is hard to keep track of how many versions there are of Welcome To The Pleasure Dome. Dicogs mentions 41, but does not include this one. Trevor Horn at the controls, Frankie says Enjoy!

11. Yellow Magic Orchestra - Computer Games (Ben Liebrand Fire Cracker Mix) 6:37
Master Reference Quality Grand 12 Inches Exclusive
Taken from the old CBS/Sony library.
Some of you might recognize this from Jennifer Lopez track "I'm Real", but this is the original thing. Brilliantly insane and greatly inspiring including the full "Computer Games"Intro and a full 8 bar break. Kraftwerk where the European pioneers, The Yellow Magic Orchestra were there Asian counterparts. This one was in my turntable in 1978 along with Isao Tomita. Check them out!
CD 3

1. First Choice - Dr. Love (12”) 8:21
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
Great funky soul track running even longer than the original 12" version, featuring an instrumental build up before the vocals kick in.
2. Rick James - You And I (Disco Version) 8:04
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company.
Rick on a Disco trip in 1978. Presented here in the full 12" version.
3. Loleatta Holloway - Love Sensation (12”) 8:36
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
This is the longest version ever, referred to as "unreleased version". It includes a long instrumental build up right from the piano count-in. I removed one distracting and not so elegant "cough" in that countdown, so as not to distract from the whole beauty of the song.
4. Richard T. Bear - Sunshine Hotel 6:13
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company.
First heard this one in what was probably 1978 at the Garda Lake in Italy. Loved it immeadiately for it's groove with the Syndrums going on. The main vocals are actually quite "Rock" sounding, but it surely brings back memories.
5. Rose Royce - Do Your Dance (Part 1 & Part 2) 9:19
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company.
Probably one of the best tracks they ever made. This is a trip! Taking you through grooves, build-ups, vocals and incredible breaks and mindblowing funky synth solos.
6. Sparque - Let’s Go Dancin’ (Club Version) 8:10
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
Don't you just love that groove with that syncopated snare? Great funky guitars and outrageous vocals. Let's go dancing.
7. Taana Gardner - Work That Body (Part 1) 7:30
Vinyl Transfer
Carefully restored by hand, removing all possible "clicks" and "ticks". Cleaned up fade-out as well. Sounds good and will have to make do for now untill I come accross the real master.
8. Simplicious Ft. Eugene Wilde - Let Her Feel It (12" Version) (Vocal) 6:18
Master of undetermined origin
Master supplied by record company, but I hear some stuff typical of vinyl transfers. Got this one as part of a package form the record company. Consider it as bonus.
9. Direct Current - Everybody Here Must Party (12” Vinyl) 5:07
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company.
Just came across this one during compiling this edition. So not much hidtory for me on this one.
10. Deodato - Also Sprach Zarathustra (Album Version) 9:01
Master Reference Quality
Taken from the Sony Master Tape Archive.
Lost this track years ago and whilst looking for recordings to complete my intro on the Grandmix 2010, I found this gem in the Sony archives.
Just think of the apes in 2001 A Space Odyssey touching the black vertical slab, this version starting and all the apes start to boogie.
The original master has great differences in volume. I tried to adjust those as carefully as possible, keeping the original dynamics, but relieving you from having to adjust your volume throughout this epic trip.
CD 4

1. Marvin Gaye - Got To Give It Up (Part 1 & Part 2) 11:48
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
This is me listening to the first k-tel Soul compilation albums in the mid 70's. Now here it is in full length awesomeness for you to enjoy.

2. Dayton - The Sound Of Music (X-Tended Remix) 8:16
Corrected to be Master Quality again Grand 12 Inches Exclusive
Taken from digital master.
All other versions out there suffer from an error in tape transfer. During this transfer to digital, the recorder failed to maintain the correct speed resulting the tape playing slower and slower as the song progresses.
Go ahead and check your version! play the end bit and skip back to the beginning and hear how the end is indeed much lower and slower than the beginneng.
I've spent half a day correcting the whole track compared to a reference tempo and key to repitch the whole song back to it's intended tempo and key.
Only on Grand 12 Inches
3. Cheryl Lynn - Encore (Dance Version) 8:18
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
Another track from Intergalactic Disco Funk, deserving a full length presentation here. It is always hard to retain that funkyness when using drum machines, but this is a true one to the funk.
4. Teena Marie - Behind The Groove (12” Vinyl) 6:10
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
Listen to that groove! Funk meets Disco in a splendid way. Between starting to compile thsi edition and me wrighting these notes, Teena Marie has passed away December 2010. Teena , you won't be forgotten.
5. Stacy Lattisaw - Jump To The Beat (12” Vinyl) 5:21
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
If I have done the math correctly, Stacey was only 14 when she did this track. Quite a voice for such a young ivory diva.
Lots of fond memories of this track playing in my first big club, The Kwien in The Netherlands
6. Joe Bataan - Rap-O Clap-O (12” Vinyl) 5:46
Master Quality
Taken from digital master.
Haha, old-skool rap main stream style. "Started in the States and jumped to Japan, know it's known from land to land". No Hip-Hop here just clapping along on the band wagon. You'll never admit it, but in your heart you really DO like it.
"Rock shake swing your thing!"
7. Risque - Burn It Up (Mr. Dj) (12” Version) 9:50
Master Reference Quality Grand 12 Inches Exclusive
Taken from the original stereo master mixdown outtakes
Probably one of the finest Dutch productions in Italo (Fun Fun) Style. Produced by John Tilly and Åke Danielson. I actually did the first 12" edit as well. There was an USA "remix" which messed up the timing and made it hard to mix. This version goes back to the original tape outtakes from which the original version was edited. Luckily there was enough left to make a complete new edit, extending way beyond any version previously released.
8. Peter Brown - Crank It Up (Funk Town) (Part 1) 7:59
Master Reference Quality
Taken from the Sony Master Tape Archive.
Presented in the full 12" version another of Peter Brown's brilliant productions. Love the "stops"
9. Frankie Smith - Double Dutch Bus (Vocal) 5:14
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company.
Another one in the silly but full of memories department. "Uptown, Downtown, everybody's getting down".
Sssssssssssugar!
10. Brothers Johnson - Get The Funk Out Of My Face (Disco Version) 6:01
Master Quality
Master supplied by record company.
Aiming for "Ain't We Funkin' Now" no master could be found for that 12" version. So If you have one, let me know!
So plan B it was, where plan B was also just as funky as plan A, because it's the Brothers Johnson! Nuff Said! Enjoy!
